Ikkanbari (一閑張り) Workshop

“Ikkanbari” is a traditional handicraft in the Kagawa Prefecture where old and worn-out items (especially damaged baskets) are creatively “rejuvenated”, making them new and beautiful again. The technique is similar to papier-mâché, in which several layers of washi paper is pasted on a frame base, such as baskets, which is then varnished with persimmon tannin (kakishibu) for a very strong and durable finish. Kakishibu has waterproof and antiseptic properties where the finish is subdued in color and gloss. Ikkanbari not only extends the useful life of a broken object, it strengthens the original and makes ordinary, worn-out objects beautiful and decorative and reflects the owner’s personal touch.

This is a 2-part class that requires two hands-on workshop sessions. You will paste layers of washi onto the basket (shitabari, Class 1) and then add decorative designs, colors, characters, silk fabric, etc (uwabari, Class 2). Finally, apply persimmon tannin (kakishibu ) for unique coloring and durable surface protection. Varnish with clear resin is optional. The finished result is a very strong and sturdy, beautiful container.
