Kintsugi (金継ぎ) Workshop
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, literally: golden joint) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with urushi resin dusted with gold or silver powder. This technique highlights the beauty of the imperfect. There is no attempt to disguise the damage, but to make the fault lines beautiful and strong. Kintsugi transforms the object into something new and more beautiful than before by having its story made visual, welding its past to the present.
This is a one-on-one or group hands-on workshop where you bring your own damaged vessel for repair using the kintsugi technique. Repairing process is done over several sessions as each step requires drying time for urushi. The number of sessions depends on the extent of repair necessary.

Maki-e (蒔絵) Workshop
Maki-e (蒔絵, literally: sprinkled picture) is a distinctively Japanese decorative urushi work technique developed around the Heian period. Pictures and patterns employing urushi are sprinkled with gold or other metallic powder. As Maki-e works are done by hand, each craftwork carries subtly unique qualities attributed to each craftsman. The color of the image drawn from using gold or silver powders stays brilliant and stands well against the passing of time.

This is a one-on-one or group hands-on multi-sessions (typically 3 sessions) workshop where you will design and decorate on a lacquer platter using the traditional Japanese Maki-e technique. You will have options of recommended design ideas.
*Personal choice of design and vessels available only after having finished the first trial project.
