Woodwork/Furniture
I am curious about the appropriateness and purpose of materials and joinery used in different types of furniture. How do they work best for both aesthetics and function? I design and fabricate all the pieces commissioned by my clients.

My work is based on the Japanese Edo sashimono tradition of straight lines, little ornamentation, and a polished oil finishes to bring out the wood grain.
Sashimono (指し物, literally means “fitted things”) is from joining two pieces of wood together without the use of nails. Woodwork fabricated with this type of joinery lasts generations. The challenge is adapting traditional woodwork techniques found in old Japanese-style buildings to a more modern lifestyle. My objective is to create furnishings that will not warp in air-conditioned or floor-heated environments. Updated designs blend with contemporary environments and yet keep the original beauty and spirit of Edo sashimono. All of my pieces are produced at Hattori San’s wood studio in Tokyo and with his help and guidance.
